25 History and Introduction terms

As a beginner in the study of Instructional Design(ID), these terms will help understand the history and path forward.

ADDIE
noun
A conceptual and iterative process involving steps of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Illustration of the conceptual components of many ID models.
Analysis
noun
The first phase of ADDIE It is the study we do in order to figure out what to do in Instructional Design.Aims at identifying probable causes for the absence of performance and recommends a solution.
Behavoristic
noun
An approach where instruction is immediately measurable (ability to perform a task) and requires instruction to follow specific behavior objectives.
Deliverables
noun
Measurable, tangible, verifiable output that must be produced to complete the project or a training course.
Design
noun
The 2nd phase of ADDIE. It's purpose is to verify the learning tasks, performance objectives and testing strategies. A plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of training before it is built or made.
Development
noun
The 3rd phase of the ADDIE instructional systems design process. Its purpose is to develop and validate the training material.
Dick and Carey Systems Approach
noun
In 1978 a 9 step approach that views learning as a comprehensive system, rather than a variety of individual components. Components such as the instructor, learners, materials, instructional activities, delivery system, and learning and performance environments interact with each other and work together to bring about the desired learner outcomes.
Educational Psychology
noun
The study of how the learner learns. Began in 1892.
Edward Thorndike
noun
In1902 he offered the first course in education measurement at Columbia and first to apply method of quantitative research to instructional problems.
Evaluation
noun
The 5th phase of the ADDIE instructional systems design process; Its purpose is to assess the quality of the training material prior to and after implementation. Includes both formative and summative evaluation.
General System Theory (GST)
noun
1950's A theory that would explain the common elements of the theoretical constructions of various scientific disciplines. The "Modern Standard"- everything is related. Caused educators to look at factors that influence learners to create complete experiences.
Implementation
noun
The 4th phase of ADDIE instructional systems design process. The process of putting a decision or plan into effect; execution.
Instruction
noun
the delivery of information and activities that facilitate learner's attainment of intended learning goals.
Instructional Design
noun
The name given to the process of creating learning experiences and materials in a manner that results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in order to close a performance gap.
John Dewey
noun
In 1901 he was a leader in education and philosophy who sought out the link between how people learn and how to study methods of educational delivery. He believed students learn form human experiences and that a student's experiences shape the future decisions that a learner engages in.
John Dewey
Kemp, Morrison & Ross
noun
A design model that has 9 elements that are not illustrated as a specific sequence but as an oval without lines or arrows because each element can be addressed at anytime even simultaneously. Some stages may not even be required at all depending on the process and design.
Linking Science
noun
A discipline that connects two or more areas of science together.
Merrills Pebble in the Pond
noun
A design model that has 6 design phases and does not create objectives before developing content as they tend to change as instruction is developed.
Model
noun
A tool to define the activities that will guide the design and development of a project that include the steps of analyze, produce and evaluate.
Objectives
noun
The desired outcomes for the training event; what the training should accomplish in terms of performance the learners should exhibit in the learning environment in order to be considered competent.
Positivistic
noun
Idea that any 1 problem has only 1 correct answer
Post Modern
noun
The period of time in Instructional Design after the historical period referred to as modern. It is concurrently a historic time marked by intellectual movement and general social conditions. Coincides with the proliferation of computing tools.

noun
A popular postmodern approach where the final product is taken through a series of mock-ups that can be evaluated and refined. An instructional design approach that combines the design, developmental, and evaluation phases of the ADDIE model. ... It is created to test the instructional efficacy and/or usability of concepts or processes, such as the user experience and navigational framework before the actual course is built.
Successive Approximation Model (SAM)
noun
A agile instructional system design alternative to ADDIE with an emphasis on collaboration, efficiency and repetition -continually analyzing and refining your work as it’s being produced.
